This web site is designed to help inform and shape the proposed wind farm development at Spittal Hill. The site provides information and links giving you access to a wide range of materials on both the proposed wind farm itself and the reasons for developing wind power as a whole. Critically, this site will endeavour to encourage all visitors to read and digest the information available and to respond, through the site or other means, highlighting your views on the Spittal Hill Wind Farm, renewable energy and the wider climate change debate.

Excellent progress for Europe's largest windfarm

A year into construction, Whitelee - Europe’s largest windfarm, is well on schedule with the first turbine due to arrive on site in November. The 55kmsq site is being constructed near Eaglesham, south of Glasgow. When completed, the 140 turbine project will have an installed capacity of 322MW.

Over the last 12 months engineers have prepared the site for the main phase of the development with access roads and base foundations being constructed by a team of over 300 specialist contractors and engineers. During the winter months, ScottishPower engineers are looking to erect 2 turbines per week on average.

Plans are also progressing for recreational facilities across the windfarm including a state-of-the-art visitor centre. It is expected to welcome tens of thousands of visitors a year to exhibitions and learning facilities on climate change and renewable energy in Scotland.

Commenting on progress, Keith Anderson, Director of ScottishPower Renewables said; "Combating global warming is a challenge facing us all and Whitelee, as Europe's largest windfarm, will provide enough green energy to power 180,000 homes make a significant contribution to ScottishPower’s renewable targets."

BACKGROUND

Spittal Windfarm Ltd is a locally based company set up by Tom and Steven Pottinger who own the farm on Banniskirk Mains. In the early 1990s Tom and Steven were approached by developers exploring the opportunity of developing a wind farm on their land. Wind data indicated the site would be an excellent location and, more recently, Tom and Steven decided to form a company in order to hopefully develop and run the site while retaining as much local ownership as possible.
